What are laundry pods?

Laundry pods or packs are single-use packets of laundry detergent. These packets are often brightly colored, making them appealing to young children.

The packets are made out of a thin material that dissolves as the washing machine fills with water. This outer material is also easy for children to break into, either with their mouths or hands.

The detergent used in laundry packets is stronger than what is typically in bottled detergent, and can be more harmful, especially to young children.

What are the symptoms of laundry pod poisoning?

• If someone swallows laundry detergent, they may feel sick to their stomach or throw up. In serious cases, the person may have breathing problems, although this is not common.
• Getting detergent in your eyes or on your skin can cause irritation or burning. In more serious cases, getting it in the eyes can cause a corneal abrasion.

What should I do about a laundry pod poisoning?

How can I prevent laundry pod poisonings?

• Store laundry packets up high, out of the reach of children.
• Do not leave packets unattended. Children often get a hold of laundry packets from the counter or laundry basket while an adult is not looking.
• Do not allow children to play with packets or put them in their mouths.
